Statement and Updates Regarding Mike Pilavachi.

Update – September 2023
The Church of England’s investigation has confirmed that accusations against Mike Pilavachi have been substantiated. Therefore we have terminated his patron role with SWYM with immediate effect.

We commend the survivors of the abuse for speaking up and pray for God’s peace and healing to be with all those involved in this situation.

We reiterate the importance that those who have concerns about the behaviour, actions or attitudes of someone else, must be able to share these with appropriate people. We continue to encourage those who have suffered undisclosed abuse, in this and all contexts, to reach out and share their experience appropriately if possible.

May 2023
Given the recent developments at Soul Survivor and the investigation currently underway concerning Mike Pilavachi, we at SWYM have been praying for everyone involved.

Mike Pilavachi is a patron of ours; attending a few of our events in recent years and appearing on some of our publicity. A value of SWYM’s is ‘Pursuing Excellence Together’ which we seek to do in every area of the organisation, including safeguarding. Effective immediately, we are suspending Mike’s patron role with us until the findings of the investigation are announced. We have also removed all references to him on our website. We will review this position following the outcome of the investigations being undertaken by the National Safeguarding Team at the Church of England.

When allegations of abuse are made against others we must take them seriously and compassionately, whilst praying for all those involved. It is important that anyone who has concerns about the behaviour, actions or attitudes of anyone, is able to share these with appropriate people. We encourage those who have suffered undisclosed abuse, in this and all contexts, to reach out and share their experience appropriately if possible. We also acknowledge that for individuals who have been previously (or who are currently) affected by harm and abuse, the developments at Soul Survivor may be upsetting, traumatic or scary. We pray for them that they may find the necessary courage and support.

The Board of Trustees and Staff Team at SWYM are committed to being a safe, healthy and learning organisation across all areas of our work, as we strive to see children, young people and families across the South West encounter Jesus, follow him and make a decision to live for more. We therefore make this statement as a demonstration of those commitments.
