Connect is an ecumenical project supported by local churches in Mid-Devon which has been operating for over twenty years. The Connect team of trainees and local church youth workers serve in the community colleges, as well as church and community based youth groups in Crediton, Chulmleigh, Okehampton and more recently, Holsworthy. See www.connect-devon.com for more details.
Structure & Vision
Connect workers are volunteer trainee youth workers, trained by our partner South West Youth Ministries (SWYM), and assisted by associate youth workers from various churches from within the local community. Connect Mid-Devon is a registered charity. Our vision is to demonstrate Christ’s love for young people by offering support on behalf of Mid-Devon’s churches to the Community Colleges to develop young people mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially. In addition, the Connect worker will encourage and prepare young people to work out, own, and stand for their Christian faith among their peers, in their school and community.
The towns of Crediton, Okehampton, Chulmleigh and Holsworthy have populations ranging between 700-1,400. They all serve the many villages within the beautiful countryside, close to the Dartmoor National Park, the city of Exeter and they are not more than 45 minutes' drive from the coast.
Connect trainees and associate youth workers are involved in a variety of activities within their particular school, which may include: • Lesson support in RE and any other lessons in which they have a specialty • Teaching part of an RE lesson • Running the Christian Union and other lunchtime clubs • Getting alongside students in detached youth work during school hours • Planning and taking assemblies • Mentoring young people. In the wider community, our trainees continue the link with young people in the schools by supporting and leading local church youth and discipleship groups and community youth clubs. This can also include taking part in various youth camps.
