At Upton Vale, we long for each member to discover the gifts God has given them and find joy and purpose in serving God in the calling He has planned for them.  In order to help you do this, we would love to:

  • Help you discern the areas of service in which your experience and giftings may be leading you.
  • Clearly define your role, expectations and responsibilities.
  • Undertake a full induction so you know where things are and what to do.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to help you grow in your giftings.
  • Provide you with a clear reporting structure, including lines of accountability and support when needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan the children's group session in advance, which may include crafts, teaching, games, songs and activities.
  • Clearly communicate with the other team members before the children's group session and delegate tasks as appropriate.
  • Ensure that all resources, materials and equipment needed for the children's group session are in place. (Any materials purchased for the session will be reimbursed by Upton Vale in line with the group budget).
  • Organise the setting up and packing away of equipment before and after the session.
  • Take overall responsibility for the running of the children's group session.
  • Ensure that all safeguarding requirements are met, including the registering and picking up of children to and from the session.
  • Lead and support the other session team members, including receiving and giving healthy feedback on how the session went.
  • Attend quarterly meetings with the other session leaders to plan, learn and develop together.
  • Be a supportive part of the wider Children’s Team, including regularly praying for the children and team.

Essential Criteria

You need to like being with children! We know it sounds obvious, but it’s the most vital ingredient of the team. You need to believe that children are amazing, spiritual, gifts from God that we have the privilege of ministering to and learning from.

Team player – the Children’s Team is necessarily large and each team on a Sunday will involve at least three team members who need to communicate and work together to care for the children. You will need to be able to manage this small team during the session.

You need to understand and be willing to adhere to Upton Vale’s Safeguarding Policy, including allowing the church to complete a DBS check on your behalf.

You need to love Jesus, and want to share this with the children.

Preferred Criteria

A driver's license would be desirable, but not essential.

Accommodation Details

Accommodation will be provided by one of our church family members.

Week Overview

Upton Vale was committed to running a large number of programmes across a variety of ministry areas.  This included provision for pre-school and young families, and targeted children’s and youth work.  As a church we have been challenged at this pivotal time, to ask ourselves what God is doing right now at Upton Vale in Torquay.  We believe that the current pandemic is a once in a generation opportunity to re-evaluate, not only what we do but how we do it. We are asking the question ‘what does it look like to move from being a church that ran many programmes to a church that becomes a disciple making movement?’

Prior to the Covid pandemic our children's groups used to meet on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings but, as we are reviewing all we do, this may change in the future. We are in the process of appointing a new Emerging Generations Team Leader who will lead the children's, youth and young adults' team.
