Description

Here in the beautiful Forest of Dean, we’re looking for someone who is excited about contributing to the growth of a new worshipping community of children and young people. They will be based in Coleford and the surrounding villages, working alongside the Church Army Pioneer Evangelist, a SWYM placement at the Mount of Olives church, and other local churches. They will be:

  • demonstrating Jesus’ love for children and young people
  • offering practical, spiritual, emotional and social support to young people in our local primary schools so that they can experience the ‘life in all its fulness’ that Jesus offers (John 10.10)
  • encouraging young people to grow in following Jesus in all areas of their life, and to draw others to him

Trainees are encouraged to work to their strengths, whilst also developing confidence and abilities in areas of children and youth work that are new to them.

Responsibilities might include:

  • contributing to assemblies, and lessons in the primary schools, especially religious education and well-being
  • providing pastoral support to students (and staff)
  • organising and running lunchtime and afterschool clubs
  • helping to develop Mustard Tree (Fresh Expression of Church)
  • providing sessions for Y6 students as they prepare to move up to Y7
  • contributing to Open the Book
  • working with small youth house groups in local churches developing opportunities for deepening faith and witness
  • encouraging children and young people to connect with activities run by other groups in the Forest
  • producing an email prayer letter each half-term
  • assisting with fundraising events
  • engaging with other areas of church life eg. Senior Citizen’s lunch

Trainees are supported through SWYM Cluster meetings each week, alongside a line manager who will evaluate the impact of your work and help with planning, and a mentor to help your own personal and spiritual growth.

 

 

Essential Criteria

  • A personal Christian faith, and a desire to grow as part of a church community
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and young people, and a knowledge of youth cultures
  • Openness to the culture of Coleford and the surrounding area
  • Good communication skills with both adults and young people
  • Team player and a desire to see others grow
  • Able to manage own time and workload (with support from line manager), and act on own initiative
  • Able to reflect on work done, and its impact on themselves and others
  • Confidence to work in a school environment, engaging with students and staff in a professional and effective manner

Preferred Criteria

  • Creative
  • Ability to drive/cycle (with own car if possible)
  • Willingness to commit to a long-term placement (3-4 years)
