Project History
Station Hill Baptist Church is a town centre located church, which has existed for over 140 years. Historically, we have employed a youth worker since 1998 and enjoyed seeing a large number of youth and children come to faith and be baptised. However, in recent years, numbers of youth and children have dropped. We see youth, children and families as a focus of our ministry to the town and are seeking creative, fun and imaginative ways in which to communicate the Gospel to people of all ages.
Structure & Vision
Our vision is to make Sunday mornings more accessible to children, youth and families in particular. Thus means making our gathered worship times more engaging and intergenerational - with Christ still being the focus of our affections and lives. The trainee will work alongside the minister and associate minister to create a warm, loving, spiritual environment where children and youth, in particular, will feel welcomed and valued.
Location
During the week, the trainee will run groups in church members' homes, in school classrooms - and in church rooms on a Sunday.
Current Ministry
Currently, we have a fortnightly club for primary school-aged children: Live Wires. This is an afternoon club whose aim is to build good relationships with local children and their families, through games, craft and snacks. It is our prayer that these families will eventually be drawn to wider church life. There is also a Friday evening youth group who meet at a member's house, to discuss contemporary issues through a Christian lens. Recent studies have included Freedom in Christ (youth) and the Bible Course. Sunday evenings the youth attend the local Anglican church run youth group with is open to all Christian secondary young people. A typical evening would include worship and a talk. The trainee would be expected to participate in these. We would encourage and support the SWYM trainee in developing these existing groups (in particular Live Wires and Friday Group) as God leads. We would love to see a growth numerically, of course; however, it is more important to us that our children and young people grow in faith, spirituality and love of Jesus.
