Description

The role is an exciting opportunity to join the team at White River Community Church - a member of the Baptist family of churches, with 120 congregants - to assist in the outreach to, and discipleship of, the youth and children in our community.

We describe our church vision as, "Joyfully living for the glory of God as we share the heart of Christ in the heart of Cornwall." We long for God to be glorified as we joyfully live for him, in serving our community. Our Youth and Children's Worker will play a key role in demonstrating this vision, particularly amongst the youth and children in our community. They will help the secondary and primary school children who are part of the church congregation to grow in their faith, as well as build relationships with those outside the church community.

You will work alongside those responsible for the youth ministry and the children's ministry, in developing and delivering appropriate teaching and outreach programmes for the youth and children. But most importantly, you will form an integral part of the White River Community Church family as you yourself grow in your faith, and in your calling, and in the outworking of that calling.

Essential Criteria

A passionate commitment to Jesus and to his call on your life.

Ability to build good relationships and work effectively within a team.

Able to show initiative and manage flexible hours.

A drive to continuously improve, learn, and develop.

Understanding of youth culture, development, and issues faced by young people.

Public speaking in a variety of contexts and group sizes.

Enhanced DBS check will be required.

Preferred Criteria

Past experience of working with youth and children.

Working with a wide range of organisations and people with differing cultures and beliefs.

Accommodation Details

Full board and lodging will be provided by White River Community Church.

Week Overview

A 40 hour work week will be required, which includes 8 hours of study activities set by SWYM. Of the remaining 32 hours, 6-8 hours will be spent in the neighbouring fishing village of Mevagissey, supporting the pioneering work led by a young family living there. This work includes facilitating a weekly youth group for 50-60 primary school children. Apart from this youth group, time will be spent in prayer and outreach into this community.

The remaining 24-26 hours per week will be spent in St Austell, centred around the activities of White River Community Church. The primary focus will be the church's youth group for secondary school children, currently at 15-20 young people. This group meets weekly for teaching and prayer, during the Sunday church service. The group currently also meets monthly on a Friday evening in a relaxed, social context. You will assist in discerning how best to increase and develop this social interaction.

A few hours a week will also be spent supporting the team running the church coffee shop, and the team leading the church Family Centre which offers toddler groups for the community three mornings a week.

Only registered members can apply for placements.
