BODMIN YOUTH PROJECT
Placement Description: Trainee Youth Worker
Your placement is with the BODMIN YOUTH PROJECT TRUST – a CIO, and a joint initiative of Immanuel Church Bodmin (ICB), Bodmin Light and Life Church, and New Life Church, and a Mission Partner of Scripture Union.
- Placement Title: Trainee Youth Worker.
- Responsible to: The Trustees of Bodmin Youth Project Trust.
- Purpose: As part of your training, to plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate youth work alongside our volunteers which enables the young people of Bodmin and its surrounding area to explore, discover and grow in the Christian faith in a dynamic and supportive environment which encourages their holistic development into young adults.
- Location: You will be based at your hosts’ address and working at various locations across the town.
- Context: The placement will be administered by the Trust with the direct support of the partner churches, and others who wish to support the work. You are expected to both maintain and develop the existing youth groups and engage in outreach to those currently beyond the churches.
As a SWYM student, you will also have the input of the SWYM conferences, the opportunity to attend any Scripture Union Conferences, and visit other projects. You will also have the opportunity to attend the SPREE camp and other appropriate events.
You will be expected to attend Sunday worship on a regular basis and as agreed with your Line Manager and the Trustees, and to visit all partner churches on a regular basis. We encourage you to make one of our churches your “spiritual home”.
- Placement Tasks:
- To provide regular groups which offer young people opportunities to explore, develop and deepen their faith.
- To take the lead on the termly socials/outreach events.
- To participate in the sports-based outreach programme.
- To attend, with young people, events such as GLOW.

- To work one-to-one with young people, at all times seeking to offer appropriate pastoral support and advice, and referral as necessary.
- To engage with, encourage, and work alongside the team of volunteers drawn from our churches, recruiting others as required.
- To manage a small budget in line with the charity’s policies and in direct accountability to the Treasurer.
- To work at all times in line with Scripture Union/BYP’s Safeguarding Policy.
- To undertake other duties, and attend such groups, as the Trustees and yourself agree provide appropriate and useful experiences over this training year.
- Terms and Conditions
- The post runs from 1st September 2025 to 31st August 2026. You will be entitled to 20 days holiday, and all Bank Holidays. Holidays should be booked in advance with your Line Manager.
- You will be expected to attend the placement for approximately 40 hours per week, of which 8 hours will be set aside for study/attendance at Tutorials. The remaining hours will be arranged in agreement with your Line Manager and will involve some evening and weekend work (including Sundays).
- The costs of your training for this year will be met in full by the Trust. All expenses should be recorded on the Trust’s expenses’ form and passed monthly to the Treasurer.
- You will be expected to provide your own “pocket money” in line with SWYM’s directions.
- You will have regular supervision sessions with your Line Manager.
- The Trust will provide you with a Mentor who will see you at least monthly.
- You will be released for Training Conferences as appropriate.
- Accountability
- In the first instance, you are responsible to your Line Manager who is, in turn accountable to the Trustees.
- The Trust holds full public liability and personal accident insurance. You will be expected to work to the guidelines set out in the Scripture Union/BYP Safeguarding Policy. The post is subject to a satisfactory DBS Enhanced Disclosure.
- You are expected to model the highest moral standards of behaviour before our young people, particularly in the areas of alcohol, smoking, drugs, safeguarding and relationships.
Essential Criteria
We are looking for a student with a desire to engage with young people from both within and beyond the church. They should be able to take initiative, work with volunteers, and build healthy relationships with young people. They should love the Lord and long to see others know Him!
Preferred Criteria
The ideal student needs to come with some previous experience, and demonstrate an ability to work independently.
