Project History
John Inchley discovered Great Wood at the foot of the Quantock Hills in 1943 and felt immediately it was a special place.
Great Wood Camp now provides a unique outdoor educational opportunity for pupils from Somerset schools, children and young people from across the UK during school holidays and a wonderful setting for youth groups, churches and other organisations to spend a few days together.
Structure & Vision
As a Christian organisation we ensure a holiday at Great Wood can also be a spiritual experience. Our Chaplain, Patrick Weld, ministers to school groups, leads assemblies and runs activities such as archery to engage personally with campers. At the root of Scripture Union holidays is a passion to explore the Bible, learn more about God and discover His relevance today. Each day at SU holidays there is Bible teaching that is engaging and relevant giving everyone the opportunity to respond. And we know lives are given to Christ at our holidays with many campers returning as volunteers and leaders and a number also going into full time Christian ministry.
Our Chaplain has had opportunities to minister within the schools who come to Great Wood, and is now himself official Chaplain to two of them. Our vision is to multiply this ministry by putting a trainee alongside our Chaplain to work both at Great wood during the season and also within the local state schools who come to the site
Location
Great Wood is in the Quantock Hills, but the Chaplaincy ministry is within the area covered by Somerset Local Authority.
Current Ministry
Our Chaplain is full time.
Our ministry in partnership with Scripture Union is to provide a special venue and support for SU organised residential events.
